The poem behind the motif

“A Poison Tree” is a short poem by William Blake, published in Songs of Experience in 1794. It opens with an anger told and ended, and an anger kept quiet and watered instead — which grows into a tree bearing a single bright apple. The poem ends with the enemy dead beneath it.

That is the whole meaning of the tattoo in four lines: resentment that is fed rather than spoken becomes the thing that does the damage. It is a warning read inward, not a threat aimed outward — which is worth saying plainly, because the imagery alone can be misread by someone who does not know the source.

How to draw it and where it sits

The design nearly always turns on one contrast: a dark, knotted tree and a single apple that is the only bright element in the piece. Whether the apple is red in an otherwise black-and-grey tattoo, or simply the one shape left unshaded, that lone highlight is what tells the story — it is the fruit the poem's speaker never eats.

Because it is a full tree, it needs vertical space: the outer forearm, the upper arm, the calf and the spine all give the trunk room to taper properly. Roots at the base and one line of the poem along the trunk are the two most common additions. If you want it small, drop the branches and keep the trunk, the roots and the apple — that is the minimum that still reads as this tree and not just any tree.
